Black's Law Dictionary

Who can make a valid will?
In North Carolina, to make a valid will, a person must be age 18 or over, of sound mind,
and free from any improper influence.

Why do you need a will?
If you own either real or personal property, making a will is absolutely necessary to
ensure that your property is distributed in the manner you wish at your death.  Without a
will distibution will follow a legal formula that will likely not distribute the property in a
manner consistent with your wishes.
